Helen worked in retail jewellery for several years where she studied
Gemmology and gained the National Association of Goldsmiths' Retail
Jeweller’s diploma in 1986. She is registered with the London Assay Office.
After bringing up her young family and taking a change of career for several
years she is now back in the world of ‘Jewellery’. However, this time around
she is producing pieces herself.
Under the guidance of Owen Madhlope-Phillips she has gained much knowledge in
the art of silversmithing and continues to do so on a weekly basis.
Helen also works as a fused glass artist and has produced a collection of
her own glass creations incorporated with her silver work. The result is a
collection of one off jewellery pieces including bracelets, bangles, pendants
and stud earrings.
As a fused glass artist she explains that she works mainly with Bullseye
glass which is a superior art glass also used in the architectural industry
because of its quality and strength. In some of her pieces Helen adds
dichroic glass which works well with Silver. Dichroic glass is highly
reflective and also refracts light that hits it, thus creating shine and
intense colour change. Due to the nature of the glass when firing all pieces
are unique. This is because when the glass is heated to fusing point the
different colours blend and combine together. Some colours will react to
each other by changing colour completely. This obviously means that it is
very difficult to replicate a piece again as a separate combination of
the same colour glasses may produce completely different results.
In other words each piece is completely unique 'a real individual piece'
and this Helen feels greatly adds to it’s appeal.
Helen should be contacted to ensure a particular item is still
available for sale as she sells her work privately as well as on-line.
